4. こぎん刺し

こぎんは、津軽地方の伝統的な刺し子の技法です。
綿を着ることを禁じられ、麻を着ていた江戸時代の農民が、麻布では寒いからと、粗い目の間を綿の太い糸で埋めるように刺繍したことが始まりで、防寒や耐久と装飾が一緒に育ったといいます。
滞在していたACACにて、古いこぎんの着物を見ることができたのですが、それはたいそう美しく、一針一針打つときに、歌を歌っていたのではないかと思いました。

こぎんが気に入ったら、弘前市へ前川國男設計のこぎん研究所を訪ねましょう。
こちらでの機織機を見て、ラゴスの機織青年も思い出しました。青年も、うっとりするほど美しい布を、まるで体育の授業なのかという勢いで、あっという間に織り上げるのです。

5. A HAUSや在青手帖

青森ではあちこちで『A HAUS』という青森県から発信される建築雑誌を見かけます。車の中や、滞在先の本棚や、誰かの家のソファとか、そんな場所です。この雑誌は、飛行機の機内誌と建築専門誌『新建築』と学級新聞を足して割ってもう一度足したような、絶妙な雑誌で素敵です。
また、『在青手帖』という小冊子があり、ワークショップのような形で作っていて、更新もされながら、青森の見所が、とても丁寧に綴られています。
これらの印刷物を手に入れたら、青森を巡る素晴らしいガイドブックとなるでしょう。

5. 日本酒

お酒はお好きですか？　私は日本酒が大好きです。
19歳のときに、大人の友人に教わり、初めておいしいと感じた日本酒は、青森の田酒でした。そのときは日本酒のことなど好きも嫌いもなかったし、自分が未来の人生で、10日間毎日このお酒を飲むときがあるなんて、頭をかすりもしませんでしたが。

Snow blurs a border to sky　雪がたくさんあると、空と地面の区別がつきません

It snowed.
It melted right away, however.
In the afternoon, already Hanami-like weather arrived in Tokyo.
Until the day before yesterday, I was wandering in the deep snowy Aomori.
After ten days, so used to the icy weather, Tokyo feels like spring to me.

雪が、降りましたね。
でも、すぐに溶けまして、午後にはまるで、お花見のような東京でした。
一昨日まで、青森をふらふらと、右へ左へ、雪に埋もれながら、10日がたってみれば、寒さにもすっかり慣れていて、東京は、春かと思いました。

We went to Aomori for three times since Autumn.
The fences there are apple-shape, look! In winter, though, they are deep under the snow.

秋から数えて、青森を3回訪ねました。
青森のガードレールはリンゴの模様で、とても素敵です。冬はこれも雪に埋まっているので、見えませんが。

One thing we wanted to accomplish in February at Aomori Museum of Art was a workshop to build “snow architecture”.
Volunteer staffs of the museum taught us how to treat snow. We started from building a 2m-cubic igloo to learn to shape snow.

2月の青森で実現したかったひとつのワークショップが、青森県立美術館での、雪の建築。
美術館サポートスタッフの方々に、雪の扱いを教えていただき、まずは、予行演習に、およそ2m四方のキュービック・イグルーを作ることから始めました。

For travellers, snowstorm is entertaining.

その日は、途中から吹雪でしたが、旅人には、それも楽しいものです。

On the following day, 18 highschool students joined to build outdoor exhibition room with snow. The volunteer staffs got heavily impressed, "To get highschool students snow shovel is amazing! They are normally stuck in Kotatsu studying!", really?

翌日は晴天。18人の高校生と、雪を使って、青森県立美術館の外に、飛び出した展示室を作りました。「高校生が雪かきするなんて！高校生は普段はコタツで勉強ばかりよ！」と、ボランティアのおばさまたちが感激します。

One after another, snow blocks are piled up like bricks.
We get influenced by highschool girls’ Aomori-accent, while they copy Hiroi’s Kansai-accent.

雪のブロックを作って、ひとつずつレンガのように積み重ねます。
高校生の青森弁のおしゃべりは伝染するのですが、高校生は高校生で、有山君の関西弁を真似します。

There is an entrance to the cube where you see Aomori’s landscape in autumn projected upon the interior wall.

雪の室内に入ることができ、中には、私たちが10月に初めて出会った、秋の青森が投影されています。

Snow exhibition room can be seen from inside the museum.
The snow room remains after the show has ended, until spring comes to melt it all.If you have a chance to visit, please leave an object to exhibit inside.

美術館の内側から眺めると、こんな風に見えます。
展覧会が終了しても、雪の展示室は、春に溶けてなくなるまでそのまま。
もし訪ねる機会がある方は、中に、何か展示物を置いてきてみてください。

By the way, I practiced apple-peeling for another workshop. We decided not to use apples after all, but still we can recommend this joy of peeling.

ところで、今回、青森でのもう一つのワークショップで使おうと思って、リンゴの皮むきを練習していました。結局リンゴは使わないことになったのですが、リンゴの皮むきは、とても楽しいのでお勧めです。

Passing the baton from midwinter Aomori to midsummer Lagos. 真冬の青森から、真夏のラゴスへ、バトンをわたす。

Early December.
We went to Aomori in order to set up the installation “with/without me” for the LoveLove Show at Aomori Museum of Art.

The day we arrived with the first real snowstorm in the area. Take a step outside for just a moment and your hands would go numb. Though I was cursing myself for my lack of preparation (not having brought gloves), the installation’s completion is half dependent on snow, so I was gladdened to have snow much earlier than expected.
But, in fact, it snowed only one day of our stay. The bit of snow that had collected on the ground disappeared the next day. But it’s alright, as the real production will be in February.
assistant intends to go again to Aomori and complete the installation with the then abundant midwinter snow.

During the set up, we got over to Aomori International Art Center. Only 15 minutes from the center of Aomori City and located at the foot of Hakoda mountain, at ACAC there was still snow and the water had frozen over. This place with help us a great deal when we return in February.

While being able to experience a true “Snow Land”, there will be a workshop, entitled “Symmetric Experience of Time and Space”.

If you find yourself in Aomori on the 11th of February, let’s built the snow installation together. I will come greet you in snow boots.
And if you happen to be in Aomori on Valentine’s Day, let’s meet up at ACAC. I bet you could just pop by on your way down Hakoda’s slopes.

１２月初旬。
青森県立美術館ではじまった展覧会、ラブラブショーのためのインスタレーション「with/without me」の設営に青森へ向かった。
この日、青森は今年はじめての吹雪。少し外にいるだけで、手がしびれてくる。手袋さえ持ってこなかった自分の準備の悪さを嘆きつつ、今回のインスタレーションの半分が雪によって完成するため、予想外の早い雪の到来を喜ぶ。
だけど結局、滞在中、雪はこの日１日だけ。少しだけ積もった雪も翌日には消えてなくなってしまった。
でも大丈夫、本番は２月。assistantは、もう一度青森に行き、有り余る雪を使って、インスタレーションは完成するはずだから。

設営の途中、国際芸術センター青森(ACAC)に足をのばす。青森市中心からたった１５分ぐらいの距離だけど、八甲田の麓にあるACACには、雪が残り、水盤の水は凍りつく。もう一度、２月に青森にくるときには、ここにお世話になる。本当の雪国を体験しながら、空間知覚という一覧のワークショップで行うのが、『Symmetric Arrangement of Time and Space/時間と空間の対称的配置』

もし、２月１１日に青森に行く予定のある方は、青森県立美術館で、一緒に雪でインスタレーションを作りましょう。スノーブーツを履いて、お出迎えします。
そして、２月１４日に青森にいる予定のある方は、国際芸術センター青森で、お会いしましょう。八甲田山からスキーで滑り降りてくると、途中で出くわすはずです。
