"friendly alien"　バブル

Kunsthaus, known as "bubble" designed by Peter Cook has just been completed in Graz, Austria. This is a special event.

Graz is such a small town where you can only find one main street, where you see a certain person again and again, and where a waiter of one cafe, on Sundays, relaxes at another cafe opposite where he works.

The Old Town, a river, and a small mountain with a clock tower on the top, compose the perfect good-old European landscape. On the other hand, you find a lot of strange things such as contemporary sculptures, installations, and even a contemporary-temporary cafe suddenly appeared on the street, walking around the city. As Graz is Cultural Capital of Europe 2003, artful devices pop up everywhere. (Graz2003)

The biggest device is the Peter's Kunsthaus which is also called "friendly alien" because of its insect-like appearance. A giant monster hidden in trees has a significant impact as a pure architecture.

No doubt Graz would soon be crowded by a lot of tourists. Vanacular charm of small town flavoured with humorous spices still amuse people.

オーストリアのグラーツでは、つい先頃、Peter Cook の kunsthaus 通称 bubble が完成したばかりだ。これは、ちょっとした事件だ。

グラーツは、ビエンナに続く都市とはいえ、目抜き通りが1本しかないようなとても小さな街。たとえば街のあちこちで写真を撮って、その写真を並べてみると、同じ通行人が何枚もの異なる写真に写っている。若い子は、日曜日には、自分が働いているカフェのすぐ向かいのカフェでくつろぐ。こじんまりとした、小さな小さな街である。

旧市街の整然とした街並、街を南北に走る1本の川、てっぺんに時計塔を構える緑豊かな小高い山は、隙のないヨーロッパの旧きよきランドスケープ。に見えるのだが、街を歩くとすぐに妙なものを見つける。非常にコンテンポラリーな彫刻やインスタレーション、路上に突然出現するコンテンポラリーな上にテンポラリーなカフェなど。グラーツは、2003年のヨーロッパ文化首都に認定されたことから、街のそこかしこにさまざまな仕掛けが仕込まれているのだ。（Graz2003）

そして、Peter の kunsthaus は、もっとも大規模なこの街の仕掛け。木々に隠れた巨大な昆虫のような姿形から、あだ名は "friendly alien" 。純粋な建築のもつ影響力を思いきり発揮している。

グラーツはすぐに観光客で溢れる都市になるだろう。小さな街がもつその土地特有の魅力に、現代的でユーモラスな仕掛け、という組み合わせは、まだまだ人々を飽きさせないようです。
