Wedding in Lagos　ラゴスで結婚式

After you spend one day in Lagos, everything gradually starts to be covered by dirt.
Your clothes slowly turns dusky. If you walk around inside the house, your feet gets dirty very quickly. Washing feet doesn’t help much either as it gets dirty again.
It’s probably caused by dancing sandstorm, smoke, smashed concrete blocks from the developing land everywhere.
Air is slightly blackend by the smell of petrol and that of glowing skin.

Such an honest city it is!

Even every time you wash, something may turn dirty. When I noticed that water here itself is slightly blackened, I find myself liking this city.
What are the things that have to be white?

Balogun Market is a textile market located in the old business district. A lot of beautiful architecture still remain although many needs serious cleaning.

ラゴスで一日が経つと、何もかもうっすらと汚れていく。
洋服は、次第に黒ずんでいく。
裸足で室内を歩くと足の裏が黒くなり、何度洗ってもキリがない。
砂嵐が舞っているのと、煙と、あちこちの開発地で立ち上る粉砕されたコンクリート。
石油のにおいと汗ばんだ肌のにおいが混ざって、空気にうっすらと黒く色がついている。

なんて正直な街！

洗濯しても、そのたびに何かが汚れていく、ここの水自体がきっと黒ずんでいるんだと気づく頃、私はこの街を好きになっている。
白くなければいけないものって、なあに？

テキスタイルのマーケットBalogun Marketは旧ビジネス地区にある。美しい建造物も多く立つ。汚れているけど。

Papa Omotayo and Jite Brume took me around the city that day. They are both Nigerian architects bsed in Lagos/London.

Their dream is deeply related to the future of Lagos city. When I am here, there are moments when I acknowledge many people’s opinion on corruption of the city as much as the moments when I feel Lagos is the best. What happens if more and more people understand these two opposite moments?

この日の１日案内人はPapa OmotayoとJite Brume。それぞれ、ラゴスとロンドンをベースにしているナイジェリア人建築家。

二人の夢は、そのままラゴスの未来に関係ある。ここにいると、ラゴスは腐敗している、という多くの人の見解を認める瞬間と、ラゴスは最高だ、と感じる瞬間が交互にある。その二つの瞬間についてよくわかっている人たちが、もっともっと増えるとどうなる？

Jite took me to a Nigerian wedding today.
Before leaving, we were fighting to dress ourselves in the traditional African outfits that her mother lent to me.
It works like Kimono to wrap around your body, weighs like an armor suit by plenty of beautiful beads arrangement attached to the fabric, and you feel hot as if you became a mummy!

Jiteに、今日は結婚式に連れていってもらった。
出かける前、ママが貸してくれた伝統的なアフリカ衣装を身につけるのに、奮闘した。
体に巻き付けるので着物のようで、ビーズが重くて鎧のようで、着ると、ミイラになったみたいに暑い。

Anties’ (all women that are older than you can be ‘antis’) gorgeous dresses are not the only pleasure you will enjoy but never-ending music invites everyone to stand up and join dancing to the beat during the seated lunch. There is a nice DJ too.

We also started feeling like we came to dance. When we heard our favourite beats, it was impossible to stay seated. Squeezing in bride, groom, uncles and antis, we danced wrapped in our dresses that are hot and tight like Kimono.

アンティ（年上の女性はみんな「アンティ」と呼ばれる）たちの豪華絢爛な衣装を眺めるだけでも快楽なのに、ナイジェリアの結婚式は、音楽が止むことがなく、食事の最中も、立ち上がって、ビートに合わせて、誰も彼も踊り出してしまう。ナイスなDJもいる。

私たちも、踊りに来た気になってきて、音楽が気に入ると、暑いだけでなく、着物のように足の自由の利かない服を巻き付けているにもかかわらず、汗にも暑さにも負けず、花嫁花婿、アンクル、アンティたちに混ざって踊る。

By the way, don’t forget Nollywood and Nigerian music for your souvenir from Lagos.
I will return tomorrow.

ところでラゴスのおみやげには、ナリウッドとナイジェリアミュージックを忘れずに。

Striking heat wave　ストライキとヒトイキレ

The tall sound artist Emeka Ogboh who collaborated in the same project collects sound from the city of Lagos by hidden microphones and makes them available online.

Hello from Lagos!　ラゴスからこんにちは！

To people who are going to visit Nigeria, I can recommend only one guidebook; Lonely Planet West Africa. The version published in October 2009 will be the only text materials that would encourage your trip to Nigeria. Don’t google especially in Japanese.

Everyday is another hottest summer day in Lagos in December. Wherever you go you take car, however the problem is traffic jam. The mega city of 21st century is filled with people and cars which stops you to think if you are actually moving or standing still. There is no border between the two. It takes sometimes nine hours to move 1.5km as opposed to a night road that brings you home like a wind.

What you see through windows of a car is for example burning waste producing a big smoke next to a road, or men running around selling products to people inside cars. No need to find drive-through stores. You wait in the car. Cars don’t move but walking convenience stores will do the service, It’s a future city.

12月のラゴスは、毎日が、東京でいう真夏日。

どこへ行くのも車のこの街の、一番の問題は交通渋滞。21世紀の大都会は、人と車に溢れ、進んでいるのだか止まっているのだか、その境目がわからない。東京の真夜中の高速道路のようにスムースな日も、1.5km進むのに9時間かかる日もあるというのだから。

車から見える風景は、たとえば、道路の脇で消却されるゴミが煙を巻き上げている様子や、車道を走り回り物売りをしてくれる男たち。動かない車のまわりで、動く男たちが、逆ドライブスルーをしてくれる。ここは未来都市。
