My friend from school, Richard has opened up a studio with his partner off Portbello. Tonight is the opening party. They were given this space from Tom Dixon as he had moved to the new studio. "AFRICA REMIX"　『アフリカ・リミックス』

They have political problems, environmental problems, and wars in Africa.
They have vivid cascades of colours as strong as their skin, sound and rhythm deeply drumed into their bodies, and a dry humour to laugh the superficially festive world away, in Africa.

"Africa" evokes a sense of romanticism to most ears. While any roots from those industrialised countries like Europe or North America or Japan sound so boring and bland, we see all the dramatic, strong rooty concepts worth being talked about in the background of Africa. Yeah they have elephants, giraffes, and lions too!

Hayward Gallery shows the exhibition titled "Africa Remix" (http://www.africaremix.org.uk) till the middle of April, which draws many visiters obviously. Coupled with many musical events all around the town, this year in London is so much about Africa.

The conceived longing towards something totally different, exotic, and romantic has driven Europeans to consume, of course orientalism and now even South Americanism typified by Brazilian culture. Their next target and interest is towards Africa.
It's been natural the history of contemporary art has developed with the european standard ever sincce the very beginning. Anything exotic put into this context always takes the risk of easily ending up being shown as unfamiliar traditional culture to Europe. However, this exhibition is well designed with well amount of quantity and quality: Quantity as the 75 different artists from 23 countries in Africa, and quality as the qualiity of the curation purposefully showing both African artists who were educated in Europe (including those second mixed generation whose parents are a white and a black) and the genuine African artists who are completely uninfluenced by the european context, which brings a discussion about the distance between Africa and Europe, the comparison of those two from the essential point of view.
"Africa Remix" catches your eyes, is quite refreshing and strong with good enough amount of works, but at the same time I have to say, nothing would defy your prediction more than the super-futuristic view from 80's which wouldn't profoundly surprise your eyes anymore. Everything is under control as "the otherness and thus shocking to Europe" which you would expect to experience in this kind of event.

Nonetheless, it made me feel excited too. Now we have passed this period of time where everybody admires and respects any exotism or romanticism, now as everything is put on the table (as well as Japonism, Chinism, Arabianism, Brazilianism, Africanism, whatsoever), what as roots would lead the next creative scene? That's the most intriguing thing to think about. As you could see this second generation already in this exhibition, the next creation would so much represent the coexistence of different things in more concrete ways. This feeling popped up in my mind through this exhibition. In fact, this is also a big chance for us whose roots are considered to be bland. It left me the strong feeling of the next generation whose roots originally include coexistence.

アフリカには、政治の問題があり、環境の問題があり、戦争がある。
アフリカには、彼らの肌に負けない鮮やかな色があり、彼らの体を突き動かす音とリズムがあり、浮かれた世界を笑い飛ばす、乾いたユーモアがある。

アフリカという言葉は、多くの耳にロマンチシズムをもって届く。ヨーロッパや北米や日本といった先進諸国のルーツがきわめて淡白でつまらなく聞こえる今日この頃、アフリカの背後に構えているものが、よほど語るに値する、ドラマチックで強いルーツのように見えるからだ。ゾウやキリンやライオンもいますし！

ヘイワードギャラリーの２月から４月中旬までの展示で、多くの人が訪れているのが、アフリカ・リミックス展（http://www.africaremix.org.uk）である。関連の音楽イベントも多数企画されて、今年のロンドンはアフリカの年。

異質なもの、エキゾチック、ロマンチックなものへの憧れとして、東洋はとっくの昔に、すでにブラジルに代表されるような南米の面白さまで消費し終わった感じもするロンドンで、次のターゲットとしてのアフリカである。
当然西洋中心で動いてきた現代美術の文脈に、エキゾチックな世界をもってくると、簡単に、伝統文化を紹介する、という構図に陥るものであるが、アフリカ大陸23カ国から75人のアーティストが出展するという展示の「量」と、ヨーロッパで教育を受けたアフリカ人アーティスト（中にはもちろん、白人との混血で、ヨーロッパで生まれ育ったというような二世も混じっている）と、アフリカの地を出たことのない純粋培養のアフリカ人アーティストをそろえて出展させ、アフリカとヨーロッパの距離やその比較や本質の探求を促す、という展示の「質」を保つことで、落としまえはつけている。
目に新鮮で、力強く、見応えのある、大変よい展覧会であるけれど、それでも、たとえば80年代に描かれた未来像をいま目にしても、けっしてこちらの予想を超えた驚きを感じることはないように、すべては、おおよそ予想が可能な「ヨーロッパにとってのアフリカの異質さとショックに満ちた」展開である。

さてけれど、この段階を過ぎた後、すべてのエキゾチズム、ロマンチシズムがテーブルの上に出そろった後に（ジャポニズム、チャイニズム、アラビアニズム、ブラジリズム、アフリカニズムと、あれこれすでに出そろったロンドンなわけだけれど、その後に）、次のシーンを引っ張っていく強いルーツがどう表現されるのかは興味深い。今回二世の世代が登場していたように、次の表現は、異質なものどうしの共存への、さらに具体的な一歩になるはずで、張りつめた期待感が頭をよぎった。それは、ルーツが淡白な人間にとっても、ものを作るのに、一番おもしろい時代になるという予感でもある。

"tiger licking girl's butt"　少女の尻を舐めるトラ

The berlin based swedish friends Nathalie and Hans came to london for the opening of the art exhibition, "This Sweet Sickness": the group exhibition of five swedish young artists.

Throughout Nathalie's video works, the tiger licking girl's butt is extremely sweet. Check out his tongue at Rhodes and Mann Gallery on hackney road.

ベルリン在住のスウェディッシュ友達ナタリーとハンスが、展覧会オープニングのためにロンドンへやってきた。５人の若いスウェディッシュアーティストを集めたこの展覧会のテーマは「This Sweet Sickness」。

ナタリーのビデオ作品の中で、少女の尻を舐めるトラはとてもスイート。Hackney Road の Rhodes and Mann Gallery で、そのヌメラかな舌を確認していただきたいです。

His eyes open wide staring at people around are nothing unusual for us.
These eyes would reveal his profession right away even to Londoners who have no ideas what he's all about. He's GAHAKU: master painter.
This is the sight of him, when he has his eyes wider open.

日本から、画伯がロンドンにやって来た。
パンパンに脹らんだ、小さなリックサックを背負って。
ギョロギョロと一点にとどまらない目は、いつものこと。
この目を見れば、彼のことを何も知らないロンドンの人たちにも、彼が画伯であることは、すぐにバレてしまうだろう。
これが、ギョロギョロ度を増したときの画伯の視界。

guide line on the road　道の上の白い線

On car roads, on pavements, everywhere but avoiding dumps, a white line would guide you to a squiggle walk.
This line has appeared all of a sudden. If you are tempted to follow the line, you are already trapped in the walking tour of around 2km, around half an hour to accomplish.

From Liverpool Street station abounding in businessmen in black suits, to Bricklane with the smell of curry, the line takes the liberty of giving an explanation all spots around these areas.
Thanks to the shitty weather, it was worth walking with my head bending down to find this.

車道の上、歩道の上、ゴミ置き場は避けて、グニャグニャと続く、一夜にして、突如現れた白い線。ちょっとでもこの線について行ってしまったらもう最後、だいたい２キロ、おおよそ30分のウォーキング・ツアーのはじまりだ。

スーツの男達で賑わうリバプール・ストリート駅から、カレーの匂い漂うブリックレーンまで、白線に勝手に紹介されてしまう。
いつものように、冴えない天気。だから、いつものように下を向いて歩いていたかいがありました。

The dream party organised by output recordings is at Great Eastern Hotel. A tremendous hotel, with goldfish swimming under the table, with splendid music. Wouldn't it be good enough to make you feel good? Wouldn't it be good enough to drive you crazy? It's saturday night around 3AM. Don't go home before you see the earliest oldest man on bricklane starts preparing his vegetable stall.

output recordings による盛大なパーティは Great Eastern Hotel で。どんなに高級なホテルでも、テーブルの下で金魚が泳いでいても、音楽が流れてしまえば、そんなの関係ないでしょ。今夜だけは大騒ぎしてもいいんでしょ。
パーティが最高潮の土曜の夜の３時、すぐ隣のブリックレーンでは、いつものように、一番のおじいちゃんが野菜を並べはじめている。

Mira Calix in the rain　雨の中のミラ・カリックス

The Hayward Gallery, along Thames River, right next to London Bridge, is a coherent contemporary art gallery in London. The glass-made planetarium-like interactive space with a balcony, designed by Dan Graham is specially made for special events. And whenever I pass close by, how many times have I seen from buses, parties with full of joyful faces with beers in their hands? Tonight, please let us join you guys. Everybody's come to celebrate Mira Calix's new album. Warp Records' pleasant evening party in the rain. Her drum is the sound of stones hitting each other, her orchestra consists of animal voices. The magical sound from Mira Calix's laptop makes perfect tunes with the rain. The sun set is seen at the end of the Thames with a noise, she is dismissed. Don't forget to give a smile to Aphex Twin, who sits at the corner and moves his face so fast you can't really photograph him. God, it's so fast.

No need to panic when you're kicked out from the gallery at 11PM. Drunken you will easily find a beach party just by the Thames. God, it's so cold. Jump jump jump, dance dance dance. Blankets and vodka are the common wealth tonight. You're dead tired and find yourself on the bed at home next morning. Don't get mad at the sand on the sheets.

テムズ川沿いロンドンブリッジ横のHayward Galleryは現代美術ギャラリイの優等生。Dan Grahamがデザインした、ミニプラネタリウムのようなガラスドームとバルコニーでは何かとパーティがあって、ロンドン橋からビールで顔を赤くした人だかりを見かけることがしばしば。今夜は私たちも仲間に入れて。Mira Calixのニューアルバムリリースを祝ってWARP RECORDSが気持ちのよい午後のパーティ。石を打つ音をドラムに、動物の鳴き声をオーケストラに。Mira Calixのラップトップから溢れる大音量は雨の音と混ざり、テムズの先で夕日がコトンと落ちて、彼女の出番は終わり。隅っこに体育座りのAphex Twinは、満面の笑みを浮かべながらも、キッズが向けるカメラにちゃんと収まらないようにするためなのか、高速で首を動かす。

11時に突然ギャラリイが閉まって追い出されても、テムズ川に降りて即席のビーチパーティ。とっても寒いけど、ジャンプジャンプジャンプ、ダンスダンスダンス。ウォッカと毛布はシェアするから大丈夫。
疲れ果てて家にたどり着けば、翌朝ベッドは砂だらけ。

"Plastic Lions", eberg, Icelandic

New music CD introduction? Non, just a short story about a CD.
This CD was given by two DJ boys who were playing records in daylight at an empty gallery.
I asked what they were playing. They smiled and said "''Plastic Lions', eberg, Icelandic!". A minute later, after this song was over, they suddenly gave it to me.
That was very sweet. We hugged each other and I gave them two nectarines.
Special things for you will fit somebody else's mind or stomach too.
In London, war memorial day doesn't seem to exist.

CDの紹介。いいえ、CDにまつわるストーリー。
真っ昼間のギャラリイで、DJをしていた見知らぬふたりの男の子にCDをもらう。
何の曲をかけてるの？と訊ねたら、「eberg の、"Plastic Lions"。Icelandic だよ。」って、にっこり笑ってCDをくれた。
たくさん抱き合って、手に持っていたネクタリンを２つあげた。
特別なものは、誰かのお腹か心に仕舞ってしまいましょう。

"don't look now"　『赤い影』

"It is recommended that visitors bring cushions and rugs, but no chairs please. Picnics welcome, but no barbeques or glass of any kind."
This is an advisory note for the Serpentine Gallery Open-Air Film Screening held in the middle of Kensington Gardens.
A thousand of people gathering in the field, spreading picnic blankets at nine o'clock in the evening reminds me of those on Noah's Ark, waiting for the end of the world in Israel, six thousand years ago. The night is still young. The banquet under the sun.

The title for tonight is "Don't Look Now" by Nicolas Roeg, filmed in 1973.
A fantastic psycho thriller with the beautiful pictures of venice and the love scene of the young couple who've just lost their baby. Reality turns into nightmare and viceversa. Let it go the funeral of your own. Chase the shadow of your dead daughter. Time to go home when the husband's skinny young body dissolves in the picture of venice.

これはケンジントン・ガーデンのまん真ん中、サーペンタイン・ギャラリーの屋外映画会の注意書き。上映時間、夜の９時に合わせて1000人近い人がどこまでも水平な芝の上に集い、所狭しとピクニックセットを拡げる光景は、ノアの箱船で世界の終わりを待つ6000年前のイスラエル。今日も平和な宵の宴。

今夜のタイトルは『Don’t Look Now』（Nicolas Roeg、1973）。
ヴェニスの街並みと、主人公の若い夫婦のベッドシーンを美しく収めたパワフル・スリラー。夢と現実が混乱した中で、自分の葬儀を見送り、赤い服を着た死んだはずの娘を追いかける、痩せた男の体がヴェニスの風景にしんなり融けたら帰宅の時間。

A huge, dark, uncanny, brick building is a car park. Though tonight is special and without a car. tomato will have a party tonight. The party begins with the tomato-made playstation2 game projected on the irregular brick wall. No matter if you've played the snake-killer or not, this time snakes are released in 3D space. Gorgeous with the dangerous vodka drink.

レンガ造りの、やたらと広い、薄暗くて、薄気味悪い建物は駐車場。だけど、今夜は中の車を全部外に出して、tomatoのパーティです。Play station2のためにtomatoが作ったゲーム・ソフト？の映像が、レンガのでこぼこの壁に映されて、さあパーティの、はじまり、はじまり。小さい頃遊んだことがあるようなないような、蛇から逃げるゲームも、ちょっとした３次元感覚。危険なウォッカとの相性はなんていいんでしょう。

You know streets are the very interesting thing in London. But have you ever heard of the streets up on the roof? On the thin wooden boards bridged from a roof to another, trails are found of either cats or graffitti artists. Up on the roof is the very interesting thing in London.

AGGRESSIVE BARBEQUE　アグレッシヴ・バーベキュー

The beginning of summer is followed by the beginning of barbeque season! Or it should rather be called "AGGRESSIVE BARBEQUE". This unfamiliar "AGGRESSIVE BARBEQUE" means the barbeque in which you burn yourself! No, no, no more violence. Just enlivenment. But you can't kill time the whole week without an aggressive barbeque. Get a dozen beers. You don't need a map, just go out. Follow the smell to find the party!

さて、夏の始まりとともに、バーベキューの季節の始まり。いえいえ、アグレッシヴ・バーベキューの季節の始まりです。この聞き慣れない、アグレッシッヴ・バーベキューとは、自分自身を焼き尽くしてしまうほどのバーベキューのこと。またまたご冗談を。ただの景気付け。でも、アグレッシヴ・バーベキューなしには１週間を過ごすことなんてできません。１ダースのビールを用意したら、地図がなくても匂いを頼りに出かけたらいい。

"Excuse me, I'll go SS."　「私はSSに行きます。」

In the aim of escaping from boredom, neglectfully will you confront this problem. For you are already bored. You might throw a stony stare on the wall, open and close the curtain, and play and stop music at random, heavily bored, unable to enjoy the distorted melody. You might end up looking around so that some exciting instances would come into your sight. And finally, possibly maybe, you might feel like taking a comfortable smoke or going to bed to dream.

Happenings within a radius of two meters around you are often rare sometimes. Even if you could have connection to the radio, TV, or 24-hour internet just 30cm away from you, the chances of encounter with bizarre instances are extremely small as your curiosity and activeness are totally lost. Thus it might be a pain for you even just to hear others' voices or to read words. Yes, you are completely bored. Boredom would not deprive you of anything special. Nevertheless, on earth, gravity would spin you around so hard you get older without your control.

"Excuse me, I'll go SS." That's my grandfather was wont to say in his last years. Getting bored with Sci-Fi novels, the accompany of his boredom was not me sitting two meters away but "Smoking and Sleeping". I still have a problem in finding elegant behind that tops his back indifferently breaking off the conversation on the big bang model of the universe and going upstairs for "SS". It throws cold water on my childish escapade with the monotonus sound of his footsteps walking upstairs.

It's about time to skate　スケートはいかが

This photographer shoots skateboarders with some special technique. He winds a film at exactly the same speed with the skateboarder so that he can burn the moving image of the skater as a still object while catching the static background as a dynamic object.

In the academic world of architectural history in London, the theory of skateboarding is very hot. For the book "SKATEBOARDING, SPACE AND THE CITY" by Iain Borden is exciting. With their own perspective, skateboarders see the cityscape as a series of artificial waves which afford them to skate. For them, historical staircases, slopes and art-deco railings all become smoothly curved titillating landscape.

Angus Leadley Brown's "it's about time/ it's about space", is exhibited in the main hall of the Bartlett School of Architecture until December 12th.

特殊な方法でスケートボーダーを撮り続けるカメラマンがいる。スケーターと全く同じスピードでフィルムを回しながら絵を焼く。すると写真には、動いているスケートボーダーがぴったり止まって、止まっている背景が流れて写る。

ロンドンの建築史界では、スケートボード理論が盛んだ。Iain Borden の "SKATEBOARDING, SPACE AND THE CITY" がとても面白いからだ。スケートボーダーは、都市を彼ら独特の視点で、波の連続のように捉える。どんな歴史的な大階段も、スロープも、アールデコの手摺だって、彼らには刺激的で滑らかなランドスケープになる。

Angus Leadley Brown の "it's about time/ it's about space" 展は、12月12日まで、バートレットの玄関ホールで展示している。

The weather in London is...　ロンドンの天気は...

Tate Modern is something like a major department store which once obtained people's trust therefore is always full of people. From what I gather, some try to do without it as it is too popular. Statistically, however, it's got enough repeat visitors. No doubt Tate Modern is one of the most successful contemporary art museum in the world. They hold quite exquisite events, explore fancy original goods as sensitively as the real department stores.

The new great exhibition in the main hall is a huge installation by Olafur Eliasson. Overwhelming grand installation with the theme of "The Weather Project", which sounds pretty witty.

The exhibition continues until March 2004. Hope some of my friends who've got fed up with the Tate-rush will revisit this place to see this weather.

まるで市民の信頼を一手に引受けるデパートのように、人が途切れることのないテートモダン。いつ行っても混んでいるので、できるだけ行かずに済ませようとする人も多そうだ。でも、統計上はリピーターも多いというし、とにかく大成功している現代美術館の騎手であるのは疑う余地がない。本当にデパートのようなキメ細やかさで、絶妙なイベントを企画してくれたり、オリジナルグッズを売ってくれたりする。

さてテートモダンで新しく始まった展示が、Olafur Eliasson という作家の大規模なインスタレーション。これがすごいのだ。圧倒的に壮大な展示で、テーマが"The Weather Project" というから、小気味良い。

展示は2004年3月まで続く。テートモダンはもう行ったことあるし、混雑しているし、嫌だね、という友人にも、この天気を見にもう一度訪れてみることを勧めたいと思う。

Video Acts: at ICA　ICAでビデオをみる

Feel like going for a movie but witty one please. Besides, hopefully, I'd like to think about something along with the story. During the film, maybe quite a good idea would be come up, which should urge me to talk with somebody about it. Or maybe I just want to skip the rest of the story.

Video Acts at ICA Gallery is just arranged for a person like you.
More than eighty works in these three decades are exhibited with each one independently. You can be exposed to such eclectic ideas to find yourself lost in thoughts having a coffee at the cafe. Take your time. Nobody would disturb you until 1 o'clock at midnight there.

映画を観にいきたい気分、でも少しウィットが利いたのがいいな。
それにできれば、途中であれこれ考え事をしたり、そうね、いいアイデアを思いついたら友だちとゆっくりそれについて喋りたいし、途中から観てる映画のことなんか、どうでもよくなっちゃったりもしたいの。

なんて思っている人には、ICAのVideo Actsがいい。
過去30年分、80以上のビデオ作品が１作品１TVモニタを使って贅沢に上映されている。気まぐれに彼らのアイデアに触れて、飽きたらコーヒーを飲み、物思いにふければいい。思わず居眠りしちゃったりしても、カフェは深夜1時まで開いているから安心して。

Cecil Balmond

My teacher Kathryn has a great eye for what is good and I trust it.
This time, she showed me a book: "Informal", Cecil Balmond.
Balmond, a structural architect, gives wing to the design.
It is no less provocative the process explained only with sketches and arrows (something like graffiti) than that with tricky structural calculations.
It is an amusing book about structure. You'll be excited about a mixture of clarity and daring.

Kathryn先生のモノを見る目はいつも信頼できる。
今回彼女が教えてくれたのは、Cecil Balmond の "Informal" という本。
構造建築家の Balmond は、デザインをジャンプさせる。
スケッチと矢印ばかりの落書みたいな展開は、ぴりぴりした構造計算と同じくらい刺激的だ。
構造はやっぱりおもしろいのだとわくわくさせる、明確で大胆な本。

In my life, the first teacher of architecture is Kathryn Findlay. Ushida Findlay Architects is a hot office quite near from Angel in London. Recently she was nominated in a big architecture competition. She also proposed a roof garden on Tate Modern. The picture below is a luxurious house in Qatar, the Middle East. It's a residence for royalty.

Listening to the story of the richest in the Middle East, I remembered a story about a friend who left Japan last year.
He was an editor. Before he left, he told me about the reason. He said, "Mass-production is a system of distributing the patronage across multiple dedicated individuals. On the contrary to this, the great masterpiece will never been written without a good responsible man's patronage. I want to make one and only book in the world together with real king. I will go to Arab." Then he has flown to the Middle East.
The way he talked was not at all mild but sharp. I couldn't find any good alternative proposals to stop him nor any proper word for good-bye, so I kept drinking water.

During the tense conversation, without meeting at any single moment, we were dreaming the same dream.
Now I understand the reason why I couldn't speak a word.

人生で、建築を最初に教えてくれたのは Kathryn Findlay。Kathryn 先生の事務所 Ushida Findlay Architects は、ロンドンの Angel にある。最近では、大きな指名コンペに入ったり、テートモダンにルーフガーデンを提案したり、とても元気なオフィスだ。写真は、中東カタールの超高級住宅の模型。クライアントは王族だ。

中東のお金持ちの話を聞きながら、転じて、日本を去った一人の友人を思う。
編集者だった彼は、マスプロダクトは、パトロンの力を分散させて作品の質を低下させる、だから、世界に一冊しかない本を、アラブで、最強のパトロンと一緒に作るのだ、と言って中東に発った。
そう決心したその日の彼の語り口は尖っていた。引き止めるに値する代替案、あるいは、よい見送りの言葉のどちらも見つけられず、冷えたピザをいじりながら、何度も水をおかわりした。

緊張した対話の中で、何一つ交わらないままに、
私たちはおそらく、世界に対してよく似た夢を見ていた。
今は、言葉に詰まった理由をそう理解する。
