anti-squat project　不法占拠反対運動

In the centre of Rotterdam, in the building in front of Hilton Hotel, there live 9 boys who are tall.
My friend Edin's squat has been enlarged. He had a studio in the building next door last time I saw him. Now he lives in a bigger building with 8 others, adopting 3people-on-1floor system. The space for one is so huge, CDs should be on the floor not in the shelf.
According to his explanation, this is an "ANTI-squat project" for they live in this abandoned building not to have it squatted by any others. Aha, of course!

ロッテルダムど真ん中、ヒルトンホテルの真ん前の大きなビルには、9人の背の高い男の子が住んでいる。
友人エデンのスクウォットがパワーアップ。この前までは、隣のビルにスタジオをもっていたけれど、今度は、もっと大きなビルに、１フロア３人ずつ、たった９人で住んでいる。一人の持ち分はあまりに広大で、CDを棚に仕舞う必要すらない。
本人の説明によれば、これは、空きビルがスクウォットされないように、不法占拠反対運動の一環として僕らが住む、という実は「アンチ・スクウォット」プロジェクト。
へえ、なるほど！

friends　友人

Edin and Robert, young architects in Delft, are generous and tall friends of mine.
Recently they rent a dilapidated office building in Rotterdam
available for unlimited use of themselves.

There is a big void in the center of the floor,
and you see a big kitchen room at the lower level.
There may have been a restaurant. You can have a cup of coffee there.
Every morning, it is seen dozens of morning-time workers
coming out of nowhere to hold a tea party.

若い建築家のエデンとロバートは、よく育った大きな友達。
最近彼らはロッテルダムのボロボロビルを借りて、汚し放題好き放題のスペースを作った。

吹き抜けの階下には、以前レストランだったのか、大きなキッチンがあり、
コーヒーが飲めるようになっている。
そこには、毎朝何十という早朝労働者が、コーヒーを求めてどこからともなく集まってくるらしい。

ROTTERDAM

Rotterdam is a quiet city.
People there are taller than my sight range, so that I see only materials:
concrete, aluminum, and plastic.
Especially at night in winter, I can hardly see people walking on the streets.
They seem to hide themselves without making any single noise,
in the supermodern city which was made by some alien.
Drugs are taken under the eaves by people of no fixed address.
They also keep silent nights standing cold.
When the Erasmus Bridge opens itself to let ships pass under it,
cars keep completely calm waiting for things to rest as if there are nobody inside.

ロッテルダムは閑散としている。
周りの人の背が高いこともあって、視界に並ぶのは、
コンクリートやアルミやプラスチックのひんやりした質感。
特に冬の夜は、人の気配などほとんどしない。
余所者が作り上げた近代的な風景の隙間で、
人間は、大きな音を立てないようじっと隠れている、といった風情。
薬も、決まった家に住まない人たちが、家々の玄関で寒さをこらえながら、
音を立てないよう、ひっそりたしなんでいる。
エラスムスブリッジが大型船に航路を開けるときも、車は、じっと、
まるで人など乗せていないかのように、静かに事が過ぎるのを待っている。
